Handmade wooden boards from Western Australian offcuts

Second-life timber, made for the table. We make serving boards, grazing platters, chopping blocks and tables in Perth from timber that would otherwise go to waste. Every piece is a one-off.

01 · The material

Why we make boards from offcuts

Timber stores carbon for as long as it lasts, so we would rather it stayed out of the bin. Frank works with offcuts and salvaged slabs: the pieces that are too short, too odd or too characterful for a timber yard.

Knots, cracks and bark edges stay where nature put them. That is why no two boards are the same. Read more about Frank and how he works, or compare jarrah, marri and sheoak.

Film, 18 seconds, no sound. Growth rings, then a live-edge slab in the workshop: "Western Australian timber, given a second life." Every piece is a one-off: sheoak, end-grain and platters. It ends on the stall name, Swan Settlers Markets, Herne Hill.

Made for the table

Boards are made to be used. Oil one now and then and it will last for years.

How to look after a board

02 · The process

From the yard to your table, by hand

Film, 19 seconds, no sound. The four steps below, each with a photo from the workshop.
  1. Salvage

Offcuts and slabs are collected and left to dry.

  2. Cut and shape

Each piece is cut to follow the grain rather than fight it.

  3. Fill

Cracks and rivers are filled with resin on tables and feature pieces.

  4. Sand and oil

Sanded smooth and finished with food-safe oil and beeswax. Here is how to look after yours.

03 · Made to order

River tables and live-edge furniture built around one slab

River tables, live-edge dining tables, coffee tables, benches and desks, each made to your size from a slab you choose. Frank talks you through the timber, the resin colour and the base, then builds it in the workshop.
