Hand-carved timber platters and bowls, made in Perth

Carved platters are deeper than a board, so they hold olives, dips and fruit without losing them over the edge. We carve them in Perth from Western Australian sheoak, jarrah and burl, and finish each with food-safe oil. The grain shows through the carving, so every platter is different.

What are carved platters made from?

The platter in the photos above is carved from sheoak, a golden timber with dark rays that look like lace. Others are jarrah, which is deep red-brown, or burl, which has swirling grain. Burl bowls and jarrah trays with handles sit alongside the carved platters at the stall.

How are they finished?

Each piece is sanded smooth and finished with food-safe oil and beeswax. The carved hollow takes the same care as the rest: wash by hand and oil it when it looks pale. See the care guide.

Questions people ask

Are carved platters dishwasher safe?

No. Hot water and heat dry out timber and can crack it. Wash by hand, dry straight away and oil it when it looks dry.

What is the difference between a platter and a serving board?

A platter has a hollow or lip, so it holds loose food. A serving board is flat and suits things you can slice or stack.

Can I order a platter in a particular size?

We can carve to the size of the offcut. Tell us what you want to serve and we will advise.

Have a piece of timber in mind?

We can talk through a carved platter in the timber and size you like.
