Timber slab risers and cake stands, made in Perth

A slab riser is a thick round of timber set on a solid base, so you can lift a cake, a cheese board or a bowl of fruit to eye level. We make them in Perth from jarrah and other Western Australian timber, often on a gnarled burl base.

What is a slab riser used for?

People use them as cake stands, cheese stands and centrepieces. A riser puts food at a different height from the rest of the table, which makes a grazing spread easier to reach and nicer to look at. Pair one with a large grazing board or stack a small board on top of it.

Which timbers and bases are used?

The tops are thick rounds, often jarrah, with the bark edge left on when it is solid. Some sit on a burl, a gnarled growth with swirling grain that is different on every tree. Look through the gallery for the variety.

Questions people ask

Can I see a riser before I buy?

Risers are on the stall most weekends at the Swan Settlers Markets, and the gallery shows past ones.

Do risers keep the bark edge?

Some do. The bark edge is part of the tree, so it differs from riser to riser.

Can I use a riser for a wedding cake?

Many people do. Send Frank the diameter of your cake board and the date.

Need a riser for a particular cake or board?

Send Frank the diameter and height you want.
