Guide
What size grazing board do you need?
Choose a grazing board by the space on your table first and your guest count second. Measure the room you can spare, leave space for plates, then pick the nearest size. A board of 60 × 46 cm suits a spread in the middle. A long board of 88 × 33 cm suits a bench or buffet.

How do you measure for a grazing board?
- Measure the length and width of the spot where the board will sit.
- Take off the space plates, glasses and hands need at the edges.
- Choose a board that fits what is left.
A board that is too big crowds the table. A board that is too small piles food high and spills.
What sizes do we make?
Each board is cut to its offcut, so sizes vary. These two boards from the stall give a sense of scale.
| Board | Size | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Knotted board | 60 × 46 × 3 cm | Wide |
| Figured board | 88 × 33 × 3 cm | Long and narrow |
Should the board be long or wide?
A wide board works as a centrepiece that people reach into from all sides. A long, narrow board sits along a bench, a sideboard or the middle of a long table. Use a slab riser to add height and give a smaller board more presence.
Does thickness matter?
A thick board stays flat and feels solid. Both boards in the table are 3 cm thick. Thickness also leaves room to carve a handle or a groove without weakening the board. For care, see how to oil and clean a wooden board.
Where can you see the boards in person?
At the Swan Settlers Markets in Herne Hill every Saturday and Sunday. Browse large grazing boards online first, or bring your table measurements to the stall.
