Handmade timber chess boxes, made in Perth

A chess box is a playing board and a storage box in one. The lid slides open to reveal space for the pieces, and the checkered top is cut from two contrasting timbers. Each box is made by hand in Perth, so grain and colour differ from set to set.

How does a timber chess box work?

The top is the board. Slide the lid and the pieces sit inside. When the game finishes, they go back in and the box closes. It sits on a shelf or a coffee table without looking like a game set. A few larger pieces are chess tables with a raised board, shown in the gallery.

What timbers are the boards cut from?

The squares are made from a pale timber and a dark one. The finish is food-safe oil and beeswax, which keeps the surface smooth. Wipe it clean with a soft cloth and oil it when it looks dry, as set out in the care guide.
